Explore the Princess Mononoke Image Album LP, a unique pre-score artifact from Studio Ghibli. We break down its appeal, sound, and value for collectors.
Quick Answer
For collectors of anime soundtracks and Studio Ghibli vinyl, the Princess Mononoke Image Album LP is a distinctive pre-score artifact that offers a raw, early glimpse into the film's musical world—worth adding if you value historical context and unique arrangements.
Why the Image Album Matters to Collectors
The Princess Mononoke Image Album LP holds a special place in the film's discography. It was recorded before the official soundtrack, based on director Hayao Miyazaki's notes about the music he envisioned during the planning stages. This means you're hearing the composer's initial sketches and ideas, not the final polished score.
For collectors, this pre-score status is a major draw. It offers a behind-the-scenes perspective that you won't find in the final soundtrack, making it a conversation piece and a valuable addition to any anime soundtrack vinyl collection.
Sound and Pressing Considerations
When evaluating this LP, consider its audio character. Image albums often feature more experimental or demo-like arrangements, which can sound different from the final film score. This is a feature, not a flaw, but it's worth knowing before you commit.
Also, check the available color options. The catalog lists a Color option type, meaning you can choose a specific vinyl color variant. This can affect both aesthetics and collectibility, so decide whether you want a standard black pressing or a more unique color that stands out on your shelf.
Decision Rules for Adding the Image Album to Your Collection
- If you value pre-score artifacts: This LP is for you. It offers early versions of themes that later became the final soundtrack, providing a unique listening experience. Check if the specific tracklist includes your favorite themes from the film.
- If you prioritize final soundtrack fidelity: Consider the official soundtrack instead. The Image Album's arrangements may differ from the film's final score, so if you want the exact movie music, this might not satisfy.
- If you're a color variant collector: The available color options make this LP a potential centerpiece. Choose a variant that matches your collection's aesthetic or rarity preferences. Compare the color options to see if a limited pressing is available.
