De kunst van John Alvin

Flipping through this made me late for dinner twice — the full-page prints of the Beauty and the Beast poster are stunning, and the way it walks through his process for films like Gremlins gives serious insight into how movie magic gets made.

The full-page reproductions finally do justice to Alvin’s luminous paintwork—you can see the brushstrokes in the light beams on the *Beauty and the Beast* piece. I flipped through it twice the night it arrived, and it’s already the best coffee table book I own.

I’ve been collecting art books for years, and this one finally does justice to his movie posters—the section on Blazing Saddles alone is worth it. The print quality really makes the brushwork on those Gremlins pieces pop like I’d hoped.
