‘I Cannibali’ (Aka ‘The Cannibals’, ‘The Year Of The Cannibals’) is a film directed by Liliana Cavani in 1970, freely inspired by Sophocles’ Antigone, re-setting the events in an undefined dystopic near future in a clearly recognizable Milan. Presented at the 23rd Festival de Cannes, it was described as tragic, disturbing, timeless yet harshly realistic.

Maestro Ennio Morricone curated the soundtrack, here presented for the first time in its entirety and for the first time on vinyl with the addition of 7 previously unreleased tracks. The work, conducted by Bruno Nicolai, sees the vocal participation of Don Powell and Audrey Nohra Stainton – the latter also author of the lyrics – and the legendary choir I Cantori Moderni di Alessandroni.

Hannah W. ★★★★★

The gatefold sleeve is sturdy and the 2LP set feels substantial in hand, perfect for a deep listen of Cavani’s dystopian take on Antigone. Sound is clean and dynamic, with the score’s tense strings coming through vividly. A worthy addition for anyone into 70s Italian cinema soundtracks.

Elizabeth Q. ★★★★★

This pressing handles the film score’s quieter passages beautifully, with no surface noise between tracks. The gatefold sleeve feels sturdy, and the liner notes on the dystopian Antigone adaptation are a nice bonus for a cult soundtrack like this.

Victoria ★★★★★

The sound quality on this pressing is superb—the score’s eerie strings and muted percussion come through with real clarity. I’ve been spinning the side with Antigone’s main theme on repeat; it’s a haunting listen that fits the dystopian mood perfectly.
